Goatsmilk, Oats and Calendula Cold Process Soap Recipe

This soap uses our Pre-Mixed Oils Pouch for a quick and easy start!  We use the whole pouch for this batch which makes over 2kg of soap, so you can pour a whole loaf plus two other moulds of individual bars with the left over soap (I made 8 bars). This pouch of Pre-Mixed oils, with added Cocoa Butter, is the refill pack we supply with two of our Cold Process Soap Kits.

I used two cavities of the Mixed Floral Mould and all six cavities of the Organic Flexible Mould for my left over soap.

This soap uses our Pre-Mixed Oils Pouch for quick and easy start! We use the whole pouch for this batch, which makes over 2kg of soap, so you can pour a whole loaf, plus two other moulds of individual bars with the left over soap (I made 8 bars). This pouch of pre-mixed oils, with added Cocoa Butter, is the refill pack we supply with two of our Cold Process Soap Kits. The current stock of Australian Olive Oil is very dark green, so this will affect the finished colour of the soap and may change depending on colour of the fixed oils you use to make this soap.

With this batch I made a whole loaf and then poured 8 more individual bars. The one full Silicone Lined Loaf Mould which accounts for most of the soap, and then I combined the leftover soap in one jug and poured into individual decorative soap moulds for gifting.

To use the whole pouch of oils, that weighs 1480g, you need to use 208g of Sodium Hydroxide and 480g of distilled water. From the water allowance 50g is set aside to hydrate the Goatsmilk Powder and another 50g to hydrate the Colloidal Oatmeal before adding these to the traced soap.

To keep this nice and natural I scented it with a basic, but favourite blend of two essential oils, a ratio of 50:50 Lavender Pure Essential Oil and Valencia Orange Pure Essential Oil. This blend partners nicely with the sunny colour of the design featuring Infused Calendula Oil and petals.

What you need:

• 1 x Pre-mixed Oils Refill Pouch
• 25ml Infused Calendula Oil
• 30g Colloidal Oatmeal
• 50g Goatsmilk Powder
• Calendula Petals - A handful plus a little more to decorate 
• 20g (4 teaspoons) Sodium Lactate
• Medallion Gold Mica or Midas Gold Mica – Optional to finish the single bars 

• 35g French Lavender Pure Essential Oil*
• 35g Valencia Orange Pure Essential Oil*
  **This is a tad over 3%, but some of the Orange will lift off during gel and then curing

Overview:
Jug One has: 1140g traced soap, plus all the hydrated Goatsmilk, all the Infused Calendula Oil and all the Orange Essential Oil
Jug Two has: 1140 traced soap, plus all the Colloidal Oatmeal mixed in with all the Lavender Essential Oil and a handful of Calendula Petals
First, let’s get organised!

If this method is sounding a little complex, I mark the jugs so I don’t mix them up … “Jug One” and the other is “Jug Two”. Place the measured ingredients to the side of each jug and deal with one jug and then the other.

Equipment:

All your usual Cold Process Soap making equipment and safety gear including gloves and goggles
Large bowl – to hold 2.5 - 3 litres
2 x large jugs – needs to hold 1.5 litres
2 x 250ml beakers or cups
Large spoon or spatula
Wooden Loaf Mould with Silicone Liner
Spare single cavity soap moulds for the balance of the soap after pouring the loaf

Method:

Loosen, and then warm the entire Pre-mixed Oil Pouch, either carefully in the microwave or in a pan of hot water. Ensure the contents of the oils pouch is completely liquid and well mixed. If using a hot water bath, it will take a little longer. The time frame is dependent on the time of year you are soaping.

Prep the ingredients:

• 380g Distilled Water to use with the Lye
  plus
•   50g Distilled Water into one glass beaker or jug
•   50g Distilled Water into a second beaker or jug
• 208g Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
• Add the Lye to the pail with the 380g Distilled Water – stir in a well-ventilated area as usual – set aside
• When ready to combine the Lye Water and Oils, add Sodium Lactate to Lye Water Pail 
• Warm the two beakers of water to enable the powders to mix more easily
• Mix the Colloidal Oatmeal into one beaker of warmed Distilled Water
• Mix the Goatsmilk Powder into the other beaker of Distilled Water
• NB: If either mixture is staying lumpy, warm a little more and stir again. If the powders are stubborn, I use a coffee frother or mini mixer to deal with any dry spots
  
  
  
• Empty the entire contents of the oil pouch into a large jug or bowl. Pour the lye water into the oils and bring to light trace
• Divide the thinly traced soap into two equal portions
• Now prepare Jug One - add the hydrated Goatsmilk mixture, the Infused Calendula Oil and all the Orange Essential Oil. Mix this these through the traced soap, keep to a medium trace if possible
• Either eyeball the half way point on the mould, or you can make a mark on the mould 
• Pour the Jug One soap into the mould, up to the mark, which is about half full
• Set the balance of the soap in this jug aside
• Now for Jug Two – add the Colloidal Oatmeal mixture, all the Lavender Essential Oil and a handful of Calendula Petals. Mix this these through the traced soap, keep to medium trace if possible
• Check the soap in the mould to ensure it has set up enough to hold the second pour (so that there is a nice straight level line on the finished soap).
• Pour the soap in Jug Two over the back of the spoon or spatula to avoid making a dent in the surface of the yellow soap (No need to spritz with Isopropyl Alcohol as Cold Process Soap layers don’t need it
• Pour the soap right up to the rim of the silicone
• Now move to the two left over jugs of soap
• Pour one of the jugs into the other – it will be medium to heavy trace
• Pour or spoon the soap into the extra single cavity moulds you have ready, tap them down and set aside
• By now the top layer of the loaf will be firming up, use the back of a teaspoon to push the soap up into a peak down the centre of the mould
• Sprinkle the extra Calendula Petals along the ridge of the soap
• Cover and Insulate – A cardboard sheet bent into an A shape protects the top of the loaf from being flattened by the insulation
• In a couple of days, the soap should be hard enough to unmould – it if it is still too soft leave it for several more days
• Once unmoulded, slice to your preferred thickness and then cure for 6 weeks until ready to use
