Natural Milky Soap Selection for Christmas

All three Cold Process Soaps in this project are milk based and have no added colour, the vanilla in their fragrance colours the soap different shades of tan and brown.  Just one has some Latte Mica in, which has a natural INCI. (If you don't have this, use our Cappuccino or Chocolate Gold Mica to give you a similar colour).

I love using our Silicone Column Mould, and wanted to make a trio of Cold Process Soaps for gifting this Christmas.  I have also made these soaps, pictured below in guest sizes with six different fragrances, and all of them are uncoloured, and they use the vanilla discolouration for their differing colours.  This project includes Almond Biscotti with Almond and Coconut Milk, Sleigh Ride with cows milk Natural Yoghurt and Almond Milk (after L'Occitane) Fragrance with Buttermilk - all yummy dairy additives.  If you are looking for a Vegan alternative, substitute with Coconut Milk, Coconut Milk Powder, Soy Milk Powder or a Nut Milk.

Though this tutorial noted as intermediate soaping ability, these soaps use basic milk soaping techniques (no slushy/frozen or 100% milks), so if you already have a few batches under your belt these will be within your ability.

Vanilla Discolouration in Kitchen Soap Set

For each of the three batches of soap the base oils are the same, so to avoid confusion, each fragrance will have instructions on this page as the themed soaps have different milks and fragrance instructions.

Other fragrances that work really well using this concept are:

Gingersnap
Burnt Sugar
Cinnamon Sugar
Chai Tea
Oatmeal Milk and Honey
Turkish Mocha
Chocolates - Spiced Italian Chocolate, Dark Rich Chocolate, Hot Cocoa and Mint Chocolate Chip
Warm Vanilla Sugar

BATCH ONE - SLEIGH RIDE (aka Country Kitchen) with Natural Yoghurt

Equipment:

All your usual safety gear and Cold Process Soaping equipment including jugs, stirrers, stick blender etc

Country Kitchen Milk Soap

Method for Sleighride (Country Kitchen) Batch:

If you are a beginner, we recommend you make a few batches before attempting this soap due to the hot gel.   For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions.  You can also watch Soap Queen's You Tube Series on Cold Process Soapmaking.

This is the only soap with colour added, and it's quick and easy, an ITP swirl (in the pot).

  • Weigh ingredients, and hydrate the micas in a little distilled water
  • Bring soap to a light trace and add the White Pearl Mica and mix through

Sleigh Ride Milk Soap

  • Mix in the yoghurt and blitz to combine
  • Remove 3/4 cup of traced soap for the browno mica - set this aside

Sleigh Ride Country Kitchen Hand Made Soap

  •  You'll notice the colour change in the soap, but ths will settle down when it has gelled and begun curing

Latte Mica in Cold Process Soap

  • Mix the Latte Mica into the small jug of soap, try not to increase trace for a nice fine swirl
  • Add the fragrance to the main pot and give a quick mix through to combine, again try not to increase trace

 Country Kitchen Milk Soap

  • Add the coloured soap into four spots in the main soap pot - at 12, 3, 6 and 9.00 o'clock
  • Don't mix through, just give it a little tweak to the side so that it's a little more diffuse
  • Pour into the column mould, which will swirl through as you pour.  Spoon the rest of the soap into the spare moulds

Country Kitchen Milk Soap

  • Insulate if necessary and encourage a nice gel
  • Slice and cure as usual

BATCH TWO - ALMOND BISCOTTI FRAGRANCE with Almond & Coconut Milk

Method for Almond Biscotti Batch:

If you are a beginner, we recommend you make a few batches before attempting this soap due to the hot gel.   For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions.  You can also watch Soap Queen's You Tube Series on Cold Process Soapmaking.

  • Weigh ingredients and set aside the Almond & Coconut Milk and Fragrance

Almond Biscotti Cold Process Soap

  • CAUTIONIF YOU HAVE NOT WORKED WITH REDUCED WATER (DWCP) AND ARE FAIRLY NEW TO SOAPING, this is not the soap to learn with

  • If you have used reduced water previously, carefully add the Lye to the 180g of Distilled Water, stir as usual and set aside to cool in a safe place.  The mixture will be a little syrupy due to the low water content.   Because of the type of milk in this soap I prefer to combine room temperature Lye Water with the traced soap at 40°C or a touch less.  If you are a morning soaper, (like me!) you can mix the lye the night before, securing it for safety overnight

Almond Biscotti Cold Process Soap

  • Now pour the Lye Water, Sodium Lactate Plus and the Almond Milk into the liquid oils and bring the soap to light trace.  Ride that colour change wave!  The colour comes from sugars in the milks and the Almond Biscotti Fragrance
  • Heads up:  The temperature, when I added the room temperature Lye Water and Almond Milk to the melted oils was 24°C and within the space of about 10 seconds, swung up to 69°C and the colour turned to pink and then swung back to golden beige in a few seconds - this is all normal!  The colour and consistency of the traced soap should be like rich condensed milk colour when you are pouring
  • Pour into the column mould to within 1 cm of the top.  Spoon the rest of the soap into the spare moulds

Column Mold with Almond Biscotti Fragrance Soap

  • Insulate if necessary and encourage a nice gel
  • Slice and cure as usual

BATCH THREE - Almond Milk (Type) Fragrance with Buttermilk

Almond Milk Cold Process Soap

Method for Almond Milk (Type) Batch:

If you are a beginner, we recommend you make a few batches before attempting this soap due to the hot gel.   For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions.  You can also watch Soap Queen's You Tube Series on Cold Process Soapmaking.

  • Weigh ingredients, and place the 50g Distilled Water extra in a small jug and heat in the microwave (this helps the Buttermilk Powder dissolve more easily).  Then add the Buttermilk Powder and use a mini mixer or whisk to mix to a smooth slurry, no lumps!

Almond Milk Cold Process Soap

  • Combine the Lye Water, liquid oils and Sodium Lactate Plus and bring to light trace
  • Then add the Titanium Dixoide (if using)
  • Pour in the Buttermilk liquid, and fragrance and combine with the blender in short bursts
  • Pour into the column mould to within 1 cm of the top.  Spoon the rest of the soap into the spare moulds

Almond Milk Cold Process Soap

  •  Yes, I used up the last of my Steel Cut Oats in the left over soap from this batch!

Almond Milk Cold Process Soap

  • Insulate if necessary and encourage a nice gel
  • Slice and cure as usual

Natural Milky Soap Selection for Christmas

Here is the discolouration process, sometimes this takes a week or even several weeks, but with these fragrances most of the changes can be seen very quickly.

Vanilla Discolouration in Cold Process Soap

Almond Milk Cold Process Soap

Over the last couple of months during curing, the colours have hardly altered at all, the Almond Biscotti has become a little more milky caramel, and all compliment each other well.

Note:  You will also need to purchase Sodium Hydroxide (Lye), Olive Oil and Distilled water from the supermarket.  If making all three batches you will make 50 + bars of soap with ingredients over for more batches.
