Palm Free Kumquat CP Log

We used Kumquat Fragrance of to give this batch its yummy Citrus Scent! This batch will fill our Wooden Log Mould (and our Silicone Loaf Mould comfortably, and we divided the batch into two as our picture shows you - this made a two layer log. We sliced half with our Flat Blade Cutter and the other half of the log with our Crinkle Cutter Blade.

Ingredients:

Colours

We used 1/2 teaspoon Titanium Dioxide Powder thrown into the Lye Water for the entire batch

We coloured our batch with a combination of Carmine Liquid Pigment Dispersion, Yellow Pigment Dispersion and Brites NG Canary Yellow.

The base orange colour is a blend of:

20% Carmine Dispersion 80% Yellow Dispersion (2:8)

The top layer is coloured with a little of this blend, at a lower concentration, with Brites Yellow for CP.  The picture below shows the concentration of colour I used for the bottom layer.

I sprinkled a fine layer of Pearl White Mica in the middle of the two layers to give a slight white line.

Method:

For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions Page

If you are a beginner, we recommend make this soap one colour or just two layers. Also, we suggest you use the higher amount of Water if you are just starting out. If you are more advanced, you can follow the instructions below and make the log as pictured, and using about 400g of Water.

  • Prepare all ingredients and line the mould as usual

  • Set aside two x 1 litre heat safe jugs for each layer of the log

  • Bring soap to thin trace, and then divide the batch evenly (to be completely even you can weigh the two halves)

  • Colour half the soap rich shade of red/orange the orange blend and add a little more Carmine to have a nice bright pinkish red - careful not to overtrace

  • Stir through half the Kumquat Fragrance

  • Pour into prepared log mould

  • Leave this for a few minutes to allow this to set up a little

  • Now sprinkle the Pearl White Mica over the surface - use a tea strainer, or punch holes through the lid of the vial .  Wear a mask to avoid inhaling the dust

  • Now hand stir the colour through the second half of the soap a rich orange colour.  Manually stir the soap to ensure it is well mixed

  • Add the fragrance and stir through well

  • Finish the pour with the remaining soap from the main pot - pouring carefully in case the bottom layer is not firm enough.  You can pour over the back of a spoon to help the layer remain level

  • Allow to set up for 5 - 10 minutes

  • If you wish to make a textured top, use a spatula to do this now

  • Spritz with Isopropyl Alcohol to avoid possible ashing of the top surface, then insulate for gel

  • Unmould and slice as usual
