Lavender Green Tea Impressionist Soap tutorial

Soap Queen's tutorial on "Impressionist Soap" really inspired me to try a batch using the "sauce bottle technique".  If my photo's don't make it all clear, I recommend reading Anne-Marie's tutorial too as it makes it all perfectly clear.

The colours I used were Hydrated Green Oxide and Ultramarine Blue. You can use Liquid Ultramarine Blue Liquid or hydrate the powder, whichever you prefer.
Fragrance wise, if you aren't using Lavender Green Tea be sure that your have soaped your choice before and know how it will react in cold process soap, you don't want any acceleration at all or the soap will set up in the bottles.  I have also made this recipe and technique using Sensuous Sandalwood, White Tea and Ginger, and SQ used Sage and Lemongrass.

Ingredients

  50g Castor Oil
300g Coconut Oil
300g Olive Oil
200g Rice Bran Oil
150g Palm Oil, Sustainable
100g Mango Butter

167g Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
400 - 430g Distilled Water

 40g/ml Lavender Green Tea Fragrance
1 teaspoon  Ultramarine Blue Powder (dispersed in a little Rice Bran Oil)
1 teaspoon Hydrated Green Powder (dispersed in a little Rice Bran Oil)
3/4 to 1 teaspoon White Pearl Mica (dispersed in a little water)

50g Oat Extract (Oil Soluble)
40g Sodium Lactate Plus

Silicone Loaf Mould

Equipment Used

3 large sauce/mayonnaise bottles - from cook supply stores
Stick blender
Spatulas
3 heat safe jugs
Mini mixer - helpful but not essential

Colour Preparation:

Prepare the powdered pigments in two small cups (I use medicine measure cups) - 1 teaspoon pigment with 2 teaspoons of Rice Bran or Olive oil as above
Also prepare the White Pearl Mica, mix 3/4 teaspoon mica with 2 teaspoons of distilled water

Method

For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions Page

If you are a beginner, we recommend you make a few batches before attempting this soap as it can be a little overwhelming trying so many new things when just starting out.  If you are more experienced, you can follow the instructions below.

  • Set out your equipment and weigh the oils and lye water as usual.  It's really important to have everything well organised with this batch

  • Bring soap to a thin trace and divide into three portions ready for the squirter bottles, I like to weigh the traced soap as follows:
  • 500g for the Hydrated Green portion - mix colour into this manually and set aside - do not increase trace
  • 500g for the Ultramarine Blue portion - mix colour into this manually and set aside - do not increase trace
  • the rest of the batch is coloured with White Pearl Mica - mix colour into this manually and set aside - do not increase trace
  • It's now time for the fragrance - you won't want to waste time in pouring. Pour in one third of the Lavender Green Tea fragrance into each portion and hand stir to combine
  • Now pour each colour into a sauce bottle and screw on the lids.  I also cut the tip from these as the holes were a little small to achieve the look I was after

  • As per the tutorial and our photo's, begin pouring single trail of soap in each colour alternately.  Now you see why light trace and a non-accelerating fragrance is so important!  This process takes about 15 minutes

Each time you pour about 1cm in depth with several "stripes" of soap, tap the mould to ensure there are no air pockets in there one
I like to make a pattern in the top and used a popstick for my diagonal stripes

  • Sprinkle with Rainbow Glitter, then spritz with a little isopropyl alcohol to discourage ash and put to bed under insulation
  • As you have used a silicone mould which does not allow fast evaporation you may need to leave this soap for a few days before unmoulding

Note:  If using "Add to Trolley" button, you still need to purchase Olive Oil, Lye and Distilled Water.
