Oat, Abyssinian Oil and Vitamin E Hair Conditioner

This is my current Hair Conditioner Formula (I say current, because I adore making new conditioner formulations!)

*Note:  August 2017 -  Abyssinian Oil Extra (Crambisol®) is now back in stock, so feel free to use either Argan or Abyssinian Crambisol®, in this formulation.

I wanted to try an Abyssinian Oil and Sodium Lactate combination in the one formula.  I am well pleased with it, and it smells lush too!  It can be dispensed from Malibu Tubes, Boston lotion bottle or a Stubby Shampoo Bottle with a Pump for half my batch, and for the balance of the mixture. I scented it with Celestial Water Fragrance, but another favourite is Jasmine and Rosehip Fragrance.

If you select Geogard Ultra for your preservative, you'll need to follow the second set of instructions, so just scroll on down!

Equipment You'll Need:

1 Pyrex or microwave safe jug - 1 litre size
1 Pyrex or microwave safe jug - 250 - 500ml size
Stick blender or small electric balloon whisk - this must sit UNDER the surface of the mixture
Small hand whisk, spatulas etc
pH Strips - if using Geogard Ultra preservative

Ingredients:

Phase A

516.6g Distilled Water (86.1%)

Phase B

30g Conditioning Emulsifier (5%)
  6g Oliv-Wax LQC (1%)
6g Argan Oil (1%) *or Abyssinian Oil Crambisol®

Phase C

18g Hydrolyzed Oats (3%)
or

18g Oat Extract (3%)
13.2g Sodium Lactate Plus (2.2%)

Phase D

2.4g Liquid Germall Plus (0.4%) - I used Liquid Germall Plus, but you can also use Phenoserve (0.75%), or use Geogard Ultra (1.0%) to keep it natural
Up to 4.2g Essential Oils or Celestial Water Fragrance (0.7%) – adjust to suit, for my nose this with Rosehip & Jasmine Fragrance, this was just right found 0.4% (4 droppers only) was plenty, so do slowly add and sniff as you go!
q.s. Citric Acid and pH Strips - to balance the pH to 4.5 - 5
3.6g Vitamin E (0.6%)

Oat, Abyssinian Oil and Vitamin E Hair Conditioner

Method One (if using Liquid Germall Plus or Phenoserve preservatives):

  • Measure the Distilled Water in a large (1 Litre) Pyrex or microwave safe jug

  • Place the distilled water into microwave and heat to 75°C

  • Now place Phase B Ingredients into the smaller jug and heat in microwave to 70°C

  • Once removed from heat, check the water temperature has not dropped below 70°C and then combine Phase A (water phase) and Phase B (Oil Phase) and give a few blasts with the stick blender. Continue to mix intermittently Use a stick blender held well down under the surface to ensure a smooth mixture without introducing any air into the emulsion

  • Stir periodically until the mixture cools to approximately 40°C

  • During cool down, mix periodically with stick blender to ensure the mixture maintains a smooth, creamy consistency

Method Two (for Geogard Ultra):

  • Measure the Distilled Water in a large (1 Litre) Pyrex or microwave safe jug

  • Remove approximately 30ml of Distilled water from allowance and warm to 40°C in a jug or beaker. Add Geoguard Ultra and mix with small mechanical mixer (if you have one) or tiny whisk to ensure it is well dissolved.  Set aside.

  • Now add Hydrolyzed Oats, Sodium Lactate and fragrance or essential oils and combine well

  • Now test the pH and adjust with citric acid until you achieve a pH of 4.5 - 5

  • Add the Geogard Ultra mixture in the beaker, and then the Essential Oils or  Celestial Waters Fragrance

  • Allow to sit cool completely before piping into the Malibu tubes or potting up - though you can of course test it immediately!

Notes:

  • Whilst the Abyssinian Oil was unavailable we adjusted this formula to substitute it with Argan Oil.  Use the same amount of Argan or Abyssinian Oil - whichever you prefer.
  •
  • The Oliv-Wax used in this formula utilises a liquid crystal system and over zealous stick blending will cause this to break down over time, so take it easy with the stick blender!
  • If you want to increase moisturising properties further, increase the Hydrolyzed Oats and add some dl Panthenol, and decrease the water content accordingly.
  • If using Geogard Ultra, you'll need to add Citric Acid to your trolley
