Blueberry Jam and Yoghurt Cold Process Soap

This soap came about after a customer was having issues getting a dark blue from our Indigo Powder.  So it was time to retest our Indigo Powder. Natural colourants are notoriously unstable and results can vary widely in Cold Process Soap.  We actually used way too much in this soap, so the amount suggested has been adjusted in this tutorial!

Bramble Berry's Blueberry Jam Fragrance works really well and allows sufficient time to use the spoon technique to layer the soap.  There is some Rainbow Glitter sprinkled on the top, but that is an optional extra!

Ingredients:

Equipment
All your regular Cold Process making equipment and Safety Gear including Goggles and Gloves
2 x Tablespoons
1 x small sample cup and a small beaker or similar
Popstick or similar to mix colours
Pipettes or Droppers
Isopropyl Alcohol and Sprtizer Bottle – optional – to prevent soda ash if you decide on a textured top

If you are a beginner, we recommend you make a few batches before attempting this soap.  For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions.  You can also watch Soap Queen's You Tube Series on Cold Process Soapmaking.

Prep the dry colourants:
First step - infuse the indigo powder! I use my "Cutting Corners Infusion Method" for this batch, so no watching and stirring; I add the powder, still in the infusion liquid into my soap – this makes it darker, and a hot gel also deepens the colour.  Traditional infusing methods can also be used of course, can be found on the link below.

Indigo Powder:
A few hours ahead of your soaping session, or even the night before, infuse the Indigo Powder.  Remove approximately 40g of Olive Oil from the batch allocation and pour into a glass beaker or jug.  Remember that Beakers are NOT high heat tolerant.  Warm the oil gently in the microwave on medium, in short bursts.  When the oil is warm to touch, mix in the Indigo Powder.  You can use a pop stick, stirrer or mini mixer.  Then allow it to sit for an hour.  Then repeat the heating, stir again and leave it for another hour.   If you prefer to use a bag (such as a Heat Sealable Tea Bag or Muslin Cotton Bag), you will be able to make the mixture quite hot - but not boiling and extract the colour but not include the botanical matter in your soap - you’ll find the instructions on different methods of infusing herbs can be found HERE.

Mermaid Mica:
Measure ¾ teaspoon of Mermaid Mica Powder into a small sample cup or beaker and add around 1 teaspoon or the Distilled Water allocation.  Stir to remove any small dry spots.

Now to make the soap:

Blueberry Jam and Yoghurt Cold Process Soap

Prepare Lye Water, and weigh the oils etc as usual.
Check the Indigo Powder mixture is a nice dark, smooth paste or slurry with no lumps.
Set aside a spare mould for any leftover soap

Bring the soap to very thin trace – it needs to be medium trace at the end of the colour mixing

Add the Blueberry Jam Fragrance and stir through the soap manually.
Now add the fragrance into the main pot and stir through thoroughly, again manually, so you don't increase the thickness of the trace.

Now divide the mixture equally into the two jugs (mine are a little tall and narrow - I should have used my jugs with the pouring spouts – hindsight!)
Add the Mermaid Mica mixture to one jug and the half Indigo slurry to the other jug.  Stir the colourants well through each jug of traced soap manually – then a QUICK blast with the stick blender to ensure the colourants are well dispersed, this helps avoid speckling – remember, do not increase trace.
Now decide if you want to add the rest of the indigo – you want a rich dark blue, but not a crayon .

Working swiftly, carefully spoon a spoonful of the dark blue soap in the base of the mould, moving in a zig zag direction the length of the ould.
Now fill in the gaps with the Mermaid coloured soap.
Continue to do this alternating colours, placing the Indigo soap on top of the Mermaid soap, and the Mermaid colour on top of the Indigo soap.

Once you have filled the mould, if you have any soap over, you can scrap this into the spare mould cavities.
If you want toSpritz with alcohol to remove any surface bubbles (if using) and allow the soap plenty of time to set up
(even overnight - though if leaving in damp or humid weather,
cover the slab with a tray.

When set up, invert the mould, and peel it back from the slab of soap.

Note:  If using the trolley there is no Sodium Hydroxide or Rainbow Glitter Included.
