Pucker Up

Hi Soapy lovers, Super Soaper Sally (SSS) here,

There are times where our lips need a little more attention and TLC. With cooler temperatures on the way, this month’s spotlight is on lips and prepping them to stay smooth and hydrated all year round. Did you know that your lips don’t have any sebaceous glands? Yep that’s right. No wonder they often become dry and chapped – cue lip balm!

Lip Balms in Tubes and Pots

As the layers of skin on our lips are thinner than other parts of our body, it makes them extra sensitive so its super important that we are putting the right kinds of products on this sensitive skin.

There are so many decisions to make when finding the perfect lip balm. Colour or no colour? Balm or gloss? Flavoured or unflavoured? Ever bought a lip product that cost an arm and a leg only to be disappointed? Well now is your opportunity to create and make your very own personalised lip product that ticks all of your boxes. With a little experimentation and the help of our quality products, I am sure you can create just that! Before we dive in, there are a few things that we should cover so that we are all clued up on caring for our luscious lips.

We’ve got everything you need in order to create the perfect lip product. A variety of ingredients for you to customise not just the flavour and colour but the texture too. Lip balm newbie? Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. With our pre made lip base options it’s as easy as melt, add flavour + sweetener, pour into containers and repeat!

Our great range of Bramble Berry Lip Flavours are oil soluble and completely alcohol free. From Coconut flavoured oil capable of transporting you straight to that deserted island, to soothing Honey flavoured oil reminiscent of warm tea on a cold winters day. Each of the lip flavours has a different usage rate. Be sure to check our website for usage rates which depend on what flavour you choose. Please remember NOT to use fragrance oils in your lip products! We provide a specific line of lip flavours that are lip safe/edible so best to use them.

One important thing to remember with lip flavours is that they don’t taste as the name implies. That’s where Lip Sweetener comes into the equation. Once you add Bramble Berry’s Lip Smacking Sweetener and inhale the fragrance on the lips it tricks the brain into thinking it is “tasting” the favour. Go ahead and try it! The beauty about the lip sweetener is that it can be used alone if you didn’t want to add a specific flavour to your recipe. The recommended usage rate is 1 – 3% when using with another flavour, and up to 6% without any additional flavour – don’t forget to taste test!

Now while we are speaking of flavouring, essential oils are great, but I don’t encourage my soapy friends to use them in lip products. Our lips are too sensitive and we wouldn’t want them to burn. After all, we must remember that even though essential oils are natural, they are really really strong. Some essential oils are photosensitising too (like lime), which means that there is a chance of causing pigmentation through sun damage, which is obviously less than ideal. So proceed with caution!

When it comes to colouring our lip products typically a Cosmetic Mica is used to add colour and sparkle. Remember, not all micas are created equal (well in the lip sense anyway). We supply a range of lip safe Micas for you to choose from. Just be sure to keep an eye out for that info which will be stated under each mica colour on our website. If you prefer a more natural finish, you can go colour free which is sure to become a favourite balm in your cosmetic collection.

Our lip base options (because we love to have options) come in a variety of sizes to cater for all your creative needs weather making a small batch for family and friends or for a businesses application too. Our premium quality Premium Lip Balm Base is a blend of Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil and Avocado Oil and combines a balance of Beeswax and Coconut Oil to create a balm that is moisturising, protective and glides onto your lips. We have a Vegan Lip Balm Base option available too, which makes us happy 🙂

Using our pre-made lip balm bases makes things super easy and takes the guess work out of balm formulation!  You just need to melt it in a Pyrex jug, add some flavour and some sweetener, and pour into the Lip Pots and Tubes. You can also add some liquid oil or oil soluble extracts or vitamins. For the more advanced lip makers, we supply all the individual ingredients so you can create your own “base” and customise to your heart’s content. With a variety of Waxes, Oils, Butters, Extracts and Vitamins, the sky’s the limit!
