Gardeners Bar
- 100g Coconut oil
- 200g Palm oil
- 200g Canola oil
- 70g Sodium Hydroxide(Caustic Soda)
- 175g Water
- 1/2 cup fine Polenta (Cornmeal)
- 2 teaspoons Grapefruit Essential Oil
- 1 teaspoon Rosemary Essential Oil
- 2 teaspoons Calendula Healing Oil
Method:
The addition of polenta (cornmeal) into this bar creates a texture that is ideal for removing in-ground dirt. The Grapefruit and Rosemary Essential Oils both have antibiotic properties and the Calendula Infused Oil helps promote the healing of cuts and scrapes and soothes chapped skin.
Choc-Orange Slice
- 100g Palm Oil
- 100g Coconut Oil
- 100g Cocoa Butter
- 200g Sunflower Oil
- 70g Sodium Hydroxide
- 175g water
- 1 teaspoon Cocoa Powder
- 2 teaspoon Tangerine Essential Oil
- 1 teaspoon Orange Essential Oil
NB: Before you start making this batch mix the teaspoon of cocoa powder in a cup with 2 teaspoons of water and keep to one side.
You will also need an extra jug for the swirling process. To achieve the best results with swirling use a flat rectangular mould such as a lunchbox or lined shoe box, rather than an upright mould like a milk carton.
Mix the fats and oils with the lye water and stir until you see the first signs of trace. Add the essential oils and combine quickly but thoroughly. Pour half the soap into the spare jug and then mix in the cocoa powder mixture and stir through thoroughly.
You will now have one just filled with an orange coloured soap and another jug with the cocoa coloured soap. Take a jug in each hand and simultaneously pour the mixtures into the mould creating a free, swirly pattern. When all the soap is in the mould take a spatula and drag it through the soap mixture to combine the two colours further, creating a deeper swirl.
Insulate and allow to sit for 24-48 hours and then unmould and slice into segments, and allow 4 weeks for curing.
Cocoa Butter is the fat taken from the cocoa bean and is part of what makes chocolate taste so creamy! It is an excellent moisturiser for all skin types and creates a nice hard bar with a creamy, stable lather.
Choc-Mint Slice
If you prefer the arousing aroma of chocolate and mint, simply substitute the essential oils. Peppermint oil is so much stronger than the citrus oils, reduce the amount to 2 teaspoons of Peppermint Oil. When you split the batch to colour it, add cocoa butter to one half as before, and add one teaspoon of Green Clay mixed in with two teaspoons of water into the other batch and then swirl. Beautiful green and chocolate swirls!
