Baby Bum Balm by Lisa WB

This balm is actually good for not just babies bottoms, but everyone! It is a soothing concoction which may help to alleviate skin irritations ... but of course I need to say that it doesn't cure skin conditions (no handmade soap or cream or balm will do that, regardless of what the maker says!). If you have skin irritations which are unusual, unexplained, not clearing up and so on, you really need to seek medical attention. All this balm can do is possibly help sooth some of the irritation and it does so by the use of infused herbs which have been chosen for their well known soothing qualities.

Ingredients

150g infused olive oil (NB)
25g Cocoa Butter
25g Castor Oil
25g Macadamia Oil
25g Beeswax

(NB) - I recommend using a combination of soothing herbs in this infused blend. My personal preferences are a combination of:

Lavender Flowers
Calendula Petals
Chamomile Flowers
Peppermint Leaves
Sweet Basil
Thyme

I use dried herbs in this infusion because my herb garden is sorely lacking! I use between 35 to 50g of each herb and infuse the total in about 1 litre of olive oil. I do a slow heat infusion on the stove top. Place the oil and herbs in a pan and let simmer very gently for approximately 2 to 3 hours. Do NOT overheat else you will burn the herbs and the resultant odour is not pleasant! I just turn the hotplate on the lowest setting and leave it at that from the beginning and find this works well for me. I will look in on the infusion from time to time and stir it and make sure that it isn't burning. The herbs will get a bit crunchy but don't worry, that's to be expected. When the time is up I let the combination cool and then strain, with a piece of cheesecloth, the oil out into a jug. I gently squeeze the herbs to make sure that I get as much of the infused oil as possible. I decant the infused oil into jars and store in a dark cupboard for up to six months and use the blend in a lot of different products.

Method

As with any balm, measure all the ingredients and add them to a pan so you can slowly heat the combination. When the beeswax and cocoa butter have melted, remove the pan from the heat and stir until the blend is fully incorporated. Then decant and allow to set.

To Use

You only need to use a little at a time. Rub the balm gently into baby's bottom to help protect their skin from nappy rash and chaffing. Or you can use the balm on any irritated skin to help ease the discomfort.
