Black Amber & Lavender Log

Black Amber & Lavender Log

Black Amber & Lavender Log Black Amber & Lavender Log

This batch will fill our Wooden Log Mould comfortably, and we divided the batch into two as our picture shows you for a diagonal two tone log. We sliced half with our Flat Blade Cutter and the other half of the log with our Crinkle Cutter.

We have used Violet Ultramarine, Black Oxide and White Pearl Mica to colour the log. The violet half of the log is unfragranced as Black Amber and Lavender discolours soap, so to overcome this we have only fragranced the black half.

This recipe makes a lovely, shiny smooth bar that has a lovely silky texture and good lather.

Method:

For how to make soap from Scratch, please see our Cold Process Soapmaking Instructions Page

  • Prepare log mould by lining and propping securely between phone books or similar, so that it sits on an angle ready for the first pour. (See below for more detail)
  • Bring the soap to light trace and then divide the batch into two containers - weigh each portion to ensure two equal halves
  • Colour the violet base layer and when at medium/heavy trace, carefully pour into the log mould
  • Check that the base layer has started to set up a little (it will be a little firmer)
  • Using a small sample spoon, sprinkle a thin layer of White Pearl Mica over the base layer, carefully moistening it with the soap it is resting on
  • Now colour and fragrance the black top layer and when at medium/heavy trace, carefully pour over the back of a spoon on top of the violet layer
  • As the mould fills, carefully sit the log flat on the bench and continue filling until you have used all the black soap
  • Cover and insulate as normal

To make a diagonal line in the log mould you will need to firmly wedge the log mould on an angle. Two stacks of old books work well, and then padded out the hollow under the base with towels or wedges of foam. If using one of our Wooden Log Moulds, secure the removable base and mould with tape or elastic bands at either end.

TIPS:

  • Once the mould is wedged firmly on the angle, carefully pour half the soap into it
  • Now WAIT!.
  • Now colour and fragrance the other half and if you over- trace it will set up too soon
  • Once the soap is almost firm to touch, it's time to begin carefully pouring and re-levelling the mould again
  • Then pour the second colour from a very LOW height. A light trace works best and try pouring over the back of a spoon or spooning it carefully over the first layer to avoid an uneven line.
