A simple homemade herbal "shampoo" can be made using Soapwort Root (Saponaria officinalis).
This is more like a herbal rinse rather than a shampoo, but it does indeed foam and if you would like more foam, try it in our Foamy Bottles and you will have masses of foam. This is a lovely simple little recipe which is suitable for all hair types. Soapwort contains saponins which are similar to soap in their action which lather when agitated. This infusion can also be used as a skin cleanser if you wish to avoid soap altogether.
In this recipe I have included Lemon Verbena (or Lemon Balm) for a nice fresh citrus fragrance and if you also include some Catnip this will promote healthy hair growth.
Ingredients:
500ml Distilled Water
3 tablespoons of Dried Soapwort Root
½ tablespoon Lemon Verbena or Lemon Balm
½ tablespoon Catnip if using
**If you intend keeping the shampoo for longer than 10 days, you will need to preserve the solution with 1g/ml Germall Plus Liquid Preservative
Method:
- Boil the distilled water and then add the Soapwort
- Cover and allow to simmer for 20 minutes
- Remove from the heat and add the other herbs and replace the lid.
- When cool, strain into a bottle and keep refrigerated.
