Rich Argan & Oat Facial Treatment Recipe

This formula is a rich Argan based facial moisturiser that is pumped up with 3 types of oat products to soothe and nourish, and it's emulsified with Durosoft® PK-SG.  I have used Oat Silc which I love, but Colloidal Oats are also suitable, and can be included in the same way as described below.  Rich Argan Facial Treat (first formulation) is thicker, and plumper than the second formulation (scroll down).  The difference is that I substituted Oliv-Wax for the Cetearyl, and the end result is a lighter, more lotion like moisturiser, but it still has the benefits of all the skin-loving ingredients. 

I made the two versions to see what difference the one ingredient substitution would make.  As always, changing one ingredient can make a lot of difference, so make a trial batch of each if you are unsure.

Ingredients:

Water Phase

393g Distilled Water or Floral Water of choice
  30g Aloe Vera Gel
  15g Glycerine PF

  12g Colloidal Oatmeal USP – Hydrated in 100g/ml of the Distilled Water allowance

Oil Phase

   27g Durosoft PK SG *no longer available, please select a different emulsifier.
   12g Cetyl Stearyl Alcohol
   30g Argan Oil, Organic
   18g Jojoba Oil, Golden Organic
   12g Cocoa Butter
   12g Silc Oliv

Add when oil phase is removed from heat

    9g Oat Oil
  12g Oat Extract

Additive Phase

   3g Liquid Germall Plus
   3g Fragrance or Essential Oils Of Choice

Containers or Tubes to package the moisturiser (this is a Sampler Pack)

Equipment:

Two microwave safe jugs, 1 x 1 litre, 1 x 250ml
Stick blender or similar
Spatulas, spoons, beakers etc
Thermometer
Digital Scales
Pipettes
Ziplock bag (if piping lotion into containers)

Method:

• Assemble and then weigh ingredients and set out equipment
• Place the Distilled Water into the largest jug
• Remove 100g/ml of the Distilled Water allowance from the jug and place into a separate jug or beaker and add with the Oat Silc, stir to combine
• Leave this for 15 minutes or so, and then re-introduce the Oat Silc mixture into the main jug
• Now add the other water phase ingredients to the large jug
• Heat in the microwave in short bursts until the temperature has reached 70 - 75°C.  It is important not to overheat this as the Oat Silc should not be heated above 75°C

• Heat the jug with the oil phase ingredients in to 70 - 75°C then remove from the microwave
• Add the Oat Oil and Oat Extract after the oil phase is removed from heat
• Now combine with the water phase and continue as usual, stick blending in short bursts to emulsify the mixture

• Use the stick blender to mix intermittently during cool down until the temperature reaches around 30°C and then add the preservative and fragrance or essential oils
• The emulsion should only need manual mixing after this until it has fully cooled
• I find this formulation is best packed down the day after making it as it seems to settle and have a better viscosity and feel

Using the Piping Method to package the finished moisturiser

Argan and Oat Facial Treat with Oliv-Wax

This alternative formulation makes a more lotion like moisturiser.  The Oliv-Wax (which is palm free) replaces the Cetearyl Alcohol, and with this change the moisturiser is much lighter and more lotion-like.  The processing instructions are exactly the same as above.

You will have left over ingredients for other products.
There is no fragrance or essential oil in the trolley items.
